Mi Necrológica. My Obituary. :-)

Es innegable que pienso mucho en la muerte, pero no lo hago de forma dramática, deprimente o triste. Se que es lo único “seguro” desde el minuto que nacemos. No sabemos (en general) cuando sucederá, pero inevitablemente, nadie sale vivo de la vida.

No estoy obsesionada con la muerte, pero eso sí: me intriga profundamente.

Con mis padres manejábamos un lenguaje culto, sofisticado y enormemente sarcástico al hablar del tema.

Recuerdo varias veces el siguiente comentario de mi progenitor: “Mengano se mudó a la provincia”. En Buenos Aires (Salvo Recoleta y Chacarita) la mayoría de los cementerios se encuentran en “la provincia”, así que era su forma de decir que un conocido estaba mirando crecer los rabanitos desde abajo.

Hablábamos de nuestras vidas y nuestras eventuales muertes con igual naturalidad.

Quizás por eso supe exactamente qué contestarle al médico que quiso entubar a mi papá: “NO. No es lo que él quiere”, le dijimos junto a mi madre.

Pero este ensayo no se trata de eso, sino de pensar en el día que ya no esté. Mi familia sabe que no quiero que prolonguen mi vida si no estoy con todas mis funciones en pleno ejercicio. Ni quiero entierro o velorio. De ser posible y no es muy caro, mi elección es uno de esos métodos ecológicos, donde utilizan tu cuerpo como abono para un árbol, por ejemplo.

A lo que no me opongo es a la usanza gringa: hacer una “celebración de la vida”.

En ese caso, debería escribir mi propio aviso fúnebre. ¿Por qué dejar esa responsabilidad a otros si la escritora profesional soy yo?

No tuve la suerte de nacer en una familia religiosa que encuentra todas las respuestas a sus preguntas en libros sagrados u otras fuentes, así que me iré tal cual vine: llena de preguntas. Aunque sí recibí una respuesta importante: la muerte no es el fin. Hay todo un universo increíble más allá de nuestra corta vida terrestre y humana. Lo aprendí tras la muerte de mi amada madre.

Una mujer llamada Stacy Lois Oliver escribió su propio obituario, el cual fue publicado en 2020 tras su muerte. Se hizo viral.

¿Qué quiero que digan cuando ya no forme parte de los seres vivos? Algo parecido a lo que dijo Stacy, con varios agregados.

Sería algo así:

Aquí yazgo (nunca antes conjugué el verbo yacer) feliz con la compañía que me rodea, y feliz de la vida que tuve. No tengo nada de qué arrepentirme y no me quedó ninguna asignatura pendiente.

Ojo. No tienen que seguir mis consejos. Pero les conviene: la vida es mucho más corta de lo que parece y la mayoría de las cosas que nos sacan el sueño no se lo merecen.

Dense los gustos.

Perdonense más cosas. Y las que no pueden perdonarse, úsenlas para crecer y ser mejores personas.

Caminen y hagan ejercicios aunque no les guste, porque los últimos años de sus vidas lo pasarán mejor con un cuerpo que funcione.

No pierdan el tiempo con vicios dañinos como fumar, alcohol o drogas pesadas. Enriquecerán a los que venden esas porquerías y empobrecerán su calidad de vida.

Nunca se olviden que nada es más valioso que su salud.

También al tope de importancia, en la cima, están sus verdaderos afectos. No pierdan tiempo con gente falsa, interesada o deshonesta. Creame que tengo razón. Aunque esté muerta, escuchenme.

Amen con desparpajo, sin ataduras, sin prejuicios. No tengan miedo de sufrir: es inevitable que sufran, pero van a pasar muchos más momentos agradables si no viven con miedo. Y si no funciona… ¿quién les quita lo bailado?

Si son mujeres, aprendan defensa personal. Puede ser muy útil.

Nunca dejen que la opinión ajena, principalmente si es negativa, moldee sus decisiones.

Trabajen en ser una persona más segura de sí misma. No hagan como hice yo, que esperé a mi sexta década de vida para empezar a quererme un poco y a reconocer mis propios logros.

No es que haya sido tarde, pero si saben algo de mi vida, sabrán también que logré cosas increíbles a fuerza de ponerle garra, aprender todo lo que podía, no escuchar los montones de “NO” que intentaron frenarme. Y hasta tuve reconocimientos a nivel internacional. Todo eso sin padrinazgo ni influencias. Solita y mi alma.

Igualmente, nunca me di mucho valor ni importancia. No sean como fui. No lo recomiendo.

Sin dudas uno de mis logros más destacables es haber criado a una hija tan extraordinaria como mi Nicole. La realidad es que lo hice sola, con muy poca colaboración, careciendo de un manual de instrucciones y pasando circunstancias no siempre favorables. Así que gracias hija amada por haber sido mi mayor fuente de satisfacción en la vida. Te debo mucho.

A Santi, mi compañero de tantos años, gracias por la paciencia, el amor y el aguante. Espero haberte dicho en vida cuanto te amé la suficiente cantidad de veces.

A mis amigos…créanme que fui yo quien inventó la frase: “Los amigos son la familia que elegimos”. Los desafío a encontrar alguna referencia a esa frase antes de mi publicación de la misma en Facebook, allá por el año 2003. Una agencia de publicidad me la copió, la usó para un comercial de McDonald’s (sin mi permiso) y pasó a formar parte del lenguaje popular.

A mis amigos, decía, los adoré. Cada uno aportó lo suyo y contribuyeron, entre todos, a que mi vida fuese mucho más colorida y divertida. Espero haber aportado algo a sus vidas.

A los animalitos que compartieron mi vida y a los que rescaté: gracias por elegirme. Recomiendo mucho tener un compañero no humano. Son lo mejor que hay.

Nadie puede estar triste por mí. Al contrario. Tómense una copa de Moscato di Asti en mi honor, ríanse de todo, bailen como si nadie los mira, disfruten la naturaleza, amen y vivan la vida. Vale la pena.

PD: no me estoy muriendo (que yo sepa) y espero vivir unos 30 años más.

I admit that I think a lot about death, but I don’t do it in a dramatic, depressing, or sad way. I know that it is the only thing that is certain from the minute we are born. We don’t know (in general) when it will happen, but inevitably no one comes out of life alive. I am not obsessed with death, but it deeply intrigues me.

My parents and I used to use a cultured, sophisticated, and enormously sarcastic way of speaking to one another about death.

I remember several times the following comment from my father: “So-and-so moved to the province.”

In most of Buenos Aires, the cemeteries are in “the province,” so it was his way of saying that an acquaintance was pushing daisies.

Talking about our lives and our eventual deaths was completely natural.

Perhaps that is why I knew exactly what to answer the doctor who wanted to intubate my father: “NO. It’s not what he wants,” I said firmly while my mom stood next to me.

But this essay is not about that. It’s about thinking on the day when I’m no longer here. My family knows that I don’t want my life prolonged if I’m not fully functional. I don’t want a funeral or wake. If possible and if it’s not too expensive, my choice is one of those eco-friendly methods where they use your body as fertilizer for a tree, for example.

What I’m not opposed to is the American way of doing a “celebration of life.”

In that case, I should write my own obituary. Why leave that responsibility to others if I’m the professional writer?

I was not lucky enough to be born into a religious family, the kind that finds all the answers to its questions in holy books or in other sources, so I will leave just as I came: full of questions.

Although I did receive one important answer: death is not the end. There is a whole incredible universe beyond our short, terrestrial, human life. I learned that after my beloved mother’s passing.

A woman named Stacy Lois Oliver wrote her own obituary, which was published in 2020 after her death. It went viral.

What do I want people to say when I am no longer part of the living? Something similar to what Stacy said, with several additions.

It would be something like this:

Here I lie happy with the company that surrounds me, and happy with the life I had. I have nothing to regret and I can calmly kick the bucket, no pending matters.

Mind you, you don’t have to follow my advice. But it’s good for you: life is much shorter than it seems and most of the things that keep us awake at night don’t deserve any attention.

Treat yourself.

Forgive yourself more. And the things for which you can’t forgive yourself, use them to grow and be a better person.

Walk and exercise even if you don’t like it, because the last years of your life will be better with a functioning body.

Don’t waste your time on harmful vices like smoking, alcohol or hard drugs. You will enrich those who sell this junk and impoverish your quality of life.

Never forget that nothing is more valuable than your health.

And also at the top of the priorities list are your true affections. Don’t waste time with false, self-interested, or dishonest people. Believe me, I’m right. Even if I’m dead, you should listen to me.

Love with aplomb, without ties, without prejudices. Don’t be afraid to suffer: it’s inevitable that you will suffer, but you will have many more pleasant moments if you don’t live in fear. And if something doesn’t work out… nobody can take away what you have experienced. Focus on the good.

If you’re a woman, learn self-defense. It can be very useful.

Never let other people’s opinions, especially if they’re negative, shape your decisions.

Work on being a more self-confident person. Don’t do what I did, which was to wait until my sixth decade of life to start loving myself and to recognize my own achievements.

It’s not that it was too late, but if you know anything about my life, I achieved incredible things. I put my heart into it, learned everything I could, didn’t listen to the tons of “NOs” that tried to stop me, which resulted in my receiving many recognitions, including international ones. All of that without sponsorship or influence. All by myself and my own soul.

Anyway, I never gave myself much value or importance. Don’t be like I was. I don’t recommend it.

Without a doubt, one of my most notable achievements is having raised such an extraordinary daughter as my Nicole. The reality is that I did it alone, with very little collaboration, lacking an instruction manual and going through circumstances that were not always favorable. So, thank you, my beloved daughter, for having been my greatest source of satisfaction in life. I owe you a great deal.

To Santi, my partner of so many years, thank you for your patience, love, and endurance. I hope I have told you enough times in life how much I loved you.

To my friends…believe me, I was the one who invented the phrase: “Friends are the family we choose.” I challenge you to find any reference to that phrase before I published it on Facebook, back in 2003. An advertising agency copied it from me, used it for a McDonald’s commercial (without my permission) and it became part of popular language.

To my friends, I adored you. Each one of you contributed your own thing and you all helped make my life much more colorful and fun.

To the animals that shared my life and those I rescued: thank you. I highly recommend having a non-human companion. They are the best.

No one can be sad for me. On the contrary. Have a glass of Moscato di Asti in my honor, laugh at everything, dance like no one is watching, love, enjoy nature and live life. It’s worth it.

PS: I’m not sick or dying (as far as I know) and I’m planning to live another 30 years.
